7 Castles is a wee daunder on bikes around the back lanes and byways surrounding Alford, Aberdeenshire, taking in seven of the big hooses dotted around the Vale of Alford. The route will consists of nine off-road sectors, including grassy shortcuts, boulder strewn doubletrack, gravel paths, forestry rides, old military roads and farm lanes as well as quiet country roads. The day should be suitable for most bikes with more than 30mm of tyre, but it’s unlikely there is one type best suited for the mix of terrain we’ll encounter (you want to cram as much rubber in as you can on your CX bike). MTB’s will be fine – the pace will be relaxed, and you can help us fix our punctures!

On our travels we’ll visit*
(*Pass by. I’m pretty sure we won’t be invited in by anyone.)
The plan is to leave Alford at 10AM, aiming for lunch at the NTS Cafe at Castle Fraser. We should be back in Alford mid afternoon. Total distance is around 60km, with 950m climbing. There is no prize for finishing first, but there may spot prizes for most punctures, worst jersey and maybe for anyone who buys me an ice cream.
